St. Mark's Church-in-the Bowery presents “Passages,” curated by pianist Chelsea Randall as part of her Crossings Project exploring intersections between West African and Western music. The program will open with kora virtuoso Malang Jobarteh’s solo set of traditional West African music and new, original compositions, which blend African and Western influences, followed by Randall’s and Jobarteh's performance of two kora and piano duo pieces, co-written by the artists—“Passages” and the world premiere of “Flight.” Crossings premiered in 2023 at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music with support from New Music USA's Creator Fund.
